Pontus & Amerikanerna
About Pontus & Amerikanerna
Founded in Stockholm, Sweden in 1989 the band was fronted by [a=Pontus Holmgren] (lead vocals and guitars) who wrote all lyrics while [a=Peter Nilson] (bass) composed most of their music. The band was completed by [a=Vasa] on “drums, bowling and cats”!
The debut single “Gonna See Bout My Baby” was released in 1989 but it wasn’t until they played at Hultsfredsfestivalen that same summer, they became known to a larger audience. In January 1990 the single “Min Bror Och Jag” was released and it received extensive airplay and became the band’s first hit. They followed it up the same year with their first longplay “Via Satellit” which received high critical acclaim as well as commercial success. The icing on the cake was the Grammis they received for Best Popgroup and a sensational debut was a fact.
Well over 100 gigs followed within the next year but the band also managed to record a very strong sophomore album “Följer Ett Spår” which was released in 1991. This album produced what was to become their biggest hit “Godmorgon Columbus”. Following the recording of their second longplay, Vasa left to form [a=Big Money (2)] but Pontus and Peter went on and released “Pontus Och Peter” in 1993. After a five-year breather Pontus & Amerikanerna returned in 1998, again as a trio, and released “Kasino” which produced the radio- and clubhit “Innan Sommaren Tar Slut”.
But that was it for the band. Today all three members has moved on to different projects and a third resurrection is highly unlikely.
